GriefLink.net is a comprehensive resource for people who are facing a loss and experiencing grief, for people who want to help someone who is grieving, and for finding professionals who help people who are grieving or in the process of bereavement.

In addition to information in English and Spanish (see the Learn More tab) and articles on grief, loss and bereavement, we have a directory of grief professionals, including therapists, counselors, coaches, trainers, attorneys, funeral service companies, financial specialists, and artists, all of whom are available to help grieving people with various aspects of the grief and bereavement process.

Losing someone or something you love or care about deeply causes a natural reaction called grief. Everyone experiences it differently, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve.

Stages of Grief. Almost 50 years ago, psychologist Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, through her work with terminally ill patients, introduced what has become known as the Five Stages of Grief. Unfortunately, her work has been misinterpreted over the years where many people feel that they are supposed to go through the states in order: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. We know that while these feelings are experienced by many people during grief, not everyone experiences all of them, nor are they necessarily experienced in any particular order. Today, many feel that William Worden’s “Tasks of Mourning” is a more helpful description of the process that grieving people go through in order integrate the loss into their lives. The tasks of mourning are:

Task 1: To accept the reality of the loss
Task 2: To process the pain of grief
Task 3: To adjust to a world without the deceased
Task 4: To find an enduring connection with the deceased in the midst of embarking on a new life

Whenever we experience change, we go through a process of integrating that change into our lives. While this is most dramatic when someone we love dies, it is important to be mindful of the feelings and challenges that come with change. GriefLink.net has articles and information to help you or someone you care about gain insight, find help, support and resources. Click on Learn More in the menu for grief information in English and Spanish.

There are many types of losses that can cause a grief reaction, including:

  • Children moving away from home (empty nest)
  • Retirement
  • Financial loss
  • Divorce
  • The serious illness of a friend or loved one
  • Job Loss

Children experience losses and grieve too, though they do not always express it in the same way as adults. More information about child grief can be found on our site, including articles on child grief written by our members.

Grief can present in many different ways: anticipatory grief, compounded grief, disenfranchised grief, complicated grief, chronic grief, delayed grief, posttraumatic stress and other ways. GriefLink.net exists to help our community.

Welcome to Dr. Joanne Halverson’s profile.

I invite you to let me guide you through the dark.  Grief and loss are among the most profoundly painful and difficult life experiences which can shake up our world, our sense of self, our sense of meaning, and even the structure of our everyday life.

As a young woman I was a hospice volunteer, and then I experienced a profound loss, the loss of my first husband when my children were still quite young, which led me on the path to become a therapist and educator on grief, loss and resilience and other experiences of moving through the dark like trauma and abuse.

I have been a licensed therapist, support group leader, supervisor and consultant for over 20 years.

I’ve worked with a wide variety of people who are struggling in their journey through the dark. I have guided and supported people through mourning , including traumatic loss and loss from divorce, transitions and separation.  I  provide the skills and the guidance to help you to make it through and to eventually find a renewed meaning and fulfillment in your life.
